The right snorkel for your Toyota Hilux comes down to one thing first: which Hilux you drive. If you have an N70 (2005 to 2015), you need an N70-specific snorkel. If you have an N80 (2015 to 2025), you need the N80 version. They are not interchangeable, because the mounting points and guard line differ between the pillars. Once you have matched the generation, the rest of the decision is about material, finish and budget. This guide walks you through both, so you order the right part the first time.
At Tough Trucks we build our Hilux snorkels from 304 stainless steel and every premium snorkel carries a lifetime warranty with free shipping NZ-wide. Here is how to choose.
Which snorkel fits my Hilux: N70 or N80?
The quickest way to tell your generation apart:
- N70 (2005 to 2015) is the older shape, known in NZ as the N70.Â
- N80 (2015 to 2025) is the newer, squarer body with the larger grille and slimmer headlights. This is known as the N80.
If you are not sure send us your rego and we will confirm the fit before you buy.Â
What does a snorkel actually do?
A snorkel relocates your engine's air intake from down near the guard up to roof height. That matters for three real-world reasons
- Water crossings: it raises the intake well above the waterline, so you are not pulling water into the engine during a creek or river crossing.
- Dust: up high, the air is cleaner. Less dust reaches your air filter on dry, dusty farm tracks and gravel roads, which means the filter works less hard.
- Cleaner, cooler air: a ram-style head can feed cooler, cleaner air to the engine at speed.
A snorkel is not a licence to submarine your ute. It is insurance for the crossings, dust and conditions you actually drive in.
N70 vs N80 snorkel: what is the difference?
The snorkel body is matched to each generation's guard and mounting points, so the fit is the main difference. Beyond that, the choice within each generation is Premium or Value edition. Here is the side by side:

Should I choose the Premium or Value edition?
Both editions are manufactured from 304 stainless steel and both offer excellent fitment and durability.
The Premium Edition is our flagship snorkel. It comes with Lifetime warranty for your peace of mind. It features the highest-quality finish, tighter attention to detail, and is the version we recommend if you want the best-looking stainless snorkel on your vehicle. If you're planning to keep your ute for years or simply want the best we offer, this is the one to choose.
The Value Edition is designed for customers who want the benefits of a stainless steel snorkel while keeping costs down. It offers the same bolt-on installation and reliable performance at a lower price point, but without the premium finish and life time warranty of our flagship model.
Our recommendation: If your budget allows, choose the Premium Edition. It's the snorkel we'd fit to our own vehicles and the one most customers are happiest they invested in. The Value Edition is a great option when budget is the deciding factor.
How hard is a Hilux snorkel to install?
Our Hilux snorkels are designed to fit easily and they come with all the hardware needed to install them and a fitting template. A confident DIYer with basic tools and a hole saw can fit one in an afternoon. The one permanent step is the guard cut, so measure twice using the template before you cut.
If you would rather not cut your own guard, we offer a professional installation option at checkout on many snorkels, so our team can fit it for you. Either way, you are not left guessing.
How much does a Hilux snorkel cost in NZ?
A quality stainless steel Hilux snorkel from Tough Trucks starts at $499 for the Value edition and $779 for the Premium, for both the N70 and the N80. That includes the mounting hardware, the fitting template, free overnight shipping NZ-wide, and a lifetime warranty ( For premium models ) . You will see cheaper plastic snorkels around, and pricier custom kits over $1,000. Stainless steel at this price is the sweet spot for durability without overpaying.
Frequently asked questions
Does a snorkel void my Hilux warranty?
Fitting a bolt-on snorkel does not automatically void your vehicle warranty in NZ. A dealer can only decline a claim if the modification directly caused the fault. A correctly fitted snorkel is a common, accepted accessory on Hilux utes. However, please confirm this with your dealer first.
Will a snorkel let me drive through deep water?
A snorkel raises your air intake, which is the main risk in a water crossing, but it does not waterproof your diffs, electronics or cab. Treat it as protection for sensible crossings, not permission to go deeper than you should.
Is stainless steel better than a plastic snorkel?
Stainless steel is more durable and holds its finish better than plastic, which can fade or crack with UV and age. For NZ conditions we build in 304 stainless. We cover the full comparison in our stainless vs plastic snorkel guide.
Do you ship snorkels nationwide?
Yes. Every snorkel ships free with overnight delivery across New Zealand from our Auckland warehouse. We also ship all over Australia.Â
